This fort was started pre-Civil War and used up until 1947. It was originally taller than what you see today. We visited this site in 2011.
Civil War era cannons that were no longer used were eventually considered junk and used as filler and covered with concrete. In 1968, volunteers pulled out many of the cannons. But some were still left intact in the concrete.
