Pioneer Park – Zolfo Springs, FL

Zolfo Springs Pioneer Park

This is a small site, but it has pioneer cabins, a museum and a locomotive engine on site. They host pioneer days at this park occasionally and have a working sugar press and kettle for processing sugar cane. There is camping available at this park, and there is near-by access to the river for fossil hunters.

Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates – Fort Meyers, FL

Edison Ford Estates

This is a fascinating site to visit. There are several homes on site, Edison’s lab, study and a museum. When we visited in 2015, we arrived late in the day and did not have time to tour the entire site. The day we were there, a storm was approaching, so they shut down the site early that day.

Bok Tower Sanctuary – Lake Wales, FL

We had the opportunity to take a tour on the inside of Bok Tower. You can see a lot of interesting cabinetry, tile and iron work inside the tower.

Civil War Era Fort Zachary Taylor – Key West, FL

Ft Zachary Taylor

This fort was started pre-Civil War and used up until 1947. It was originally taller than what you see today. We visited this site in 2011.

Exploring Hemingway’s Sister Ship (in a Store) – Islamorada, FL. Keys

We visited the Florida Keys for the first time, several years ago, around 2012. One of the places we came upon was a Bass Pro Shop in the Village of Islamorada.

Gamble Plantation Historic State Park Ellenton, FL

Gamble House

This is a unique historic site featuring a plantation house, grounds and a small museum. The house is an ante-bellum style house with buttresses. It was a significant location during the American Civil War.
